Lecture FOR DEMOCRACY: Misogynistic Hate Campaigns

Gamer Gate, Amber Heard, Imane Khelif, Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf – the right-wing culture war that has been raging for years is repeatedly waged against individual women. They are dehumanized into a meme, defamed, and specifically threatened. However, the hatred that is currently raging against these women in digital spaces does not arise organically but is regularly fueled by right-wing actors. These campaigns continue to work time and again because social media provides a perfect infrastructure for its users to unleash their (trans)misogyny. This misogynistic undercurrent ultimately culminates in a global anti-feminist backlash. This lecture deals with the history and mechanisms of misogynistic hate campaigns and demonstrates the threat they pose both to the individuals affected and to our democracy as a whole.
