From an idea in a garden shed, an event emerged in 2010 from small beginnings that has since developed into a flagship event with international reach, ensuring that Rieste has gained significant recognition across Germany. Uwe Reinkemeier-Lay, who has long been involved in the cycling industry, and Daniel Meier, who works in press and public relations, initiated the 24-hour mountain bike race. The concept was inspired by 24-hour races at the European level. In Germany, there are only four races of this kind; the Rieste race is the only one in Northern Germany and, thanks to the Alfseedeich, it boasts the most elevation gain.
