Around the North Sea Crab: From the History of a North German Delicacy

It is primarily the cutters that shape the image of crab fishing today. Time and again, Günther Ennulat has gone on fishing trips in the Elbe estuary and the North Sea, allowing him to observe the technological changes of recent decades through his camera. In his latest production from 2025, the maritime filmmaker not only showcases the beauty of crab fishing but also documents long-forgotten techniques and challenges that now threaten the "red gold of the North Sea."

Throughout his seafaring life, Günther Ennulat has not only been at home on all the world's oceans, including on the hospital ship "Helgoland" and most recently on research vessels. He spent the winter in Antarctica from 1981 to 1983. Early on, he began capturing maritime life in about a hundred films. Crab fishing has repeatedly been a motif: whether aboard a wooden cutter in the 1970s or on foot alongside a fisherman with a hand net, he combined beautiful, atmospheric shots with the documentation of traditional fishing craftsmanship.
