Waterfowl dominate the landscape at Alfsee during the winter months. However, those who do not look closely might think that they are merely observing "common species" from our region. This is far from the truth, as over 20 species of duck-like waterfowl can be found in the Alfsee area during winter. In addition to the actual duck species, there are also up to three species of swans, about five species of geese, two species of brent geese, and two species of mergansers that can regularly be observed in the area. These are complemented by divers, rails, gulls, waders, herons, cormorants, and other species that either stay permanently at Alfsee or stop here during migration. To provide interested individuals with a better insight into the world of waterfowl, the Biological Station Haseniederung offers a guided tour at Alfsee as part of the area management funded by the state of Lower Saxony. During the event, Hendrik Hemmes will discuss the significance of the Alfsee area and the Haseniederung for the waterfowl that winter in our latitudes, as well as the individual bird species that rest in this region and their ecological requirements for wintering habitats. With telescopes and binoculars, participants will also be able to observe species that spend their breeding season in Northern Europe and will soon leave us for a good six months. However, the first breeding birds from our latitudes may already have returned from their southern wintering grounds. Those without binoculars can borrow one from Hendrik for the tour. Families with children are also warmly welcome! No registration is required. Cost: Participation is free, but donations are welcome! Organizer: Biological Station Haseniederung e.V. We kindly ask participants to park their cars in the linked parking lot. The walk over the bridge, up the dike, and past the restaurant "Seeterassen" takes only a few minutes.
