About the content of the book: Sometimes a cold wave is all it takes to gain new opportunities to shape one’s life even in the later years. Sincerely, with a wink, and attentively, Henning Ahrens tells the stories of people who face their age with courage: elderly parents, adult children, and the consequences of what has been done, as well as late upheavals, missed chances, and unexpected new beginnings. On the beach, the illustrator Hardy Espen steps on a soldier's dog tag and finds himself in the company of an equally unexpected yet loyal inheritance. His partner Aîné, an art historian turned florist, wants to confront her parents one last time. Héloïse, a livestock farmer and Hardy's neighbor, sees a chance to start anew on her farm, while a skirt-chasing gendarme seeks new tasks as he faces the impending end of his career. They all realize that life holds up the consequences of one’s past, that it never stands still – and that it is better to remain calm and keep pace. Thus, they set off in the west of Normandy, between hills and sea, under clouds that still promise a touch of heaven time and again. About the author: Henning Ahrens, born in 1964 in Lower Saxony, lives as a writer and translator in Frankfurt. He has translated works by Jonathan Safran Foer, Colson Whitehead, Meg Wolitzer, and Richard Powers into German, among others. He has received several awards for his literary work. His latest novel, "Mitgift," was nominated for the German Book Prize 2021.
