The focus is on Emperor Romulus, the last ruler in Rome. However, instead of desperately trying to fend off the impending invasion of the Germans, he seems to indifferently devote himself to entirely different matters. With much humor and sharp wit, Dürrenmatt raises questions about power, responsibility, and the role of the individual in history. The play is both tragic and comedic, serious and ironic – a mirror of human weaknesses and political absurdities.
