Rajen 5, 26817 Rhauderfehn

The maritime past of the Fehne can be particularly well read in the graves of its inhabitants. Numerous tombstones refer to professions such as sailor, captain, or shipbuilder, are adorned with symbols of Christian seafaring, or even proudly display the ship of the deceased, anchored in the eternal harbor after being decommissioned. They thus reflect a time when life on the Fehnen was significantly shaped by seafaring. Whether of artistic value or historical significance, each of these stones also tells a (life) story. Economic upswing and harsh strokes of fate were often closely intertwined – even in the cemeteries. Whether in native soil or on foreign shores, the exhibition is dedicated to the historical burial sites of Fehntjer seafarers and presents the stories "behind" the stones.
