The partridge, bird of the year 2026.

Dennis Burchardt from the Ecological NABU Station Aller/Oker (ÖNSA) provides information about the Bird of the Year 2026. The grey partridge was chosen as the Bird of the Year in 2026, just as it was in 1992. Many people know it, but hardly anyone sees it anymore. Why? This shy inhabitant of our agricultural landscape behaves quite secretively, as its list of predators is long. Moreover, the population has decreased by 87 percent in Germany since 1980! It is not alone in this plight, quite literally. The majority of our open-land bird species are on the Red List, as nature finds little room in modern agriculture. In Wolfenbüttel, NABU and the district have come together to work jointly for the protection of the grey partridge. Dennis Burchardt coordinates the population assessment on behalf of the district and presents the lifestyle of the grey partridge, the assessment program, causes of threats, as well as local and state-wide support measures in his lecture.
