Bat Discovery Tour (from 8 years old)

Many people are a little afraid of bats. But why is that? There are only 25 species of bats in Germany, and none of them are vampires or fruit-eaters. These little acrobats of the skies catch a huge amount of insects in flight, amounting to about a third or even half of their own body weight. The water bat, for example, catches around 4,000 mosquitoes per night! Therefore, these small, pesky mosquitoes are particularly valuable. On this discovery tour, we will playfully learn about the life of bats, how they navigate at night using echolocation, and why they are becoming increasingly rare in our area. After dusk, they go hunting, and we will also conduct a listening session to try and hear them ourselves with bat detectors. The area around the Schillat Cave, with its old forest, quarry, small ponds, and fields with hedgerows, provides a habitat for a variety of bat species waiting to be discovered. The bat discovery tour is offered by biologist and wilderness educator Ilona Jentschke. A cave tour or visit is not part of the bat discovery tour, but public tours are held beforehand.
