About 10% of the Earth's surface is covered by glaciers or ice sheets, and 70% of the Earth's freshwater exists in the form of snow or ice. The manifestations of this frozen world are diverse and occur both on land and on and beneath the ocean surface. They range from snow cover to glaciers, ice sheets, ice shelves, sea, lake, and river ice, permafrost, seasonally frozen ground, and precipitation in the form of snow or hail. Glaciers are a source of life, providing water for people, animals, and plants alike. At the same time, they are sensitive indicators of climate change and are retreating worldwide due to rising temperatures. Shrinking glaciers alter the availability of water, weaken the resilience of ecosystems, and intensify competition for water resources. The photo exhibition addresses questions regarding the reasons, significance, and regional differences of global glacier melt. It also highlights the dangers and impacts on the global climate, as well as the development of Arctic sea ice, the Greenland ice sheet, and the future of glaciers in Germany.
