Leadership – Jewish Life at Porta Westfalica

The KZ Memorial and Documentation Site Porta Westfalica and the Working Group Jewish Cemetery Hausberge of the Porta Westfalica Comprehensive School jointly invite you to a guided tour exploring the traces of Jewish life in Porta Westfalica. For centuries, Jewish citizens were an integral part of the community in Hausberge. During the tour, participants will discover places that are inextricably linked to the Jewish history of Hausberge. Michelsohnplatz is located opposite the property where the synagogue building stood in the garden of the Michelsohn family's residential and commercial building until the 1930s. From there, the route leads along the main street past the Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) dedicated to the Pinkus family. The tour ends at the Jewish Cemetery Hausberge on Kempstraße. The history of the cemetery reflects not only centuries of Jewish burial culture but also cultural and social developments, as well as the exclusion and persecution during the Nazi dictatorship, which become visible at many points. The tour lasts about 90 to 120 minutes. Parking is available around Michelsohnplatz or a bit further away on Kempstraße near the town hall. On the last section of the tour, the path ascends steeply up Kempstraße. Parking is very limited in the area of the cemetery itself.
