Carnival in Cologne

The Cologne Carnival, often referred to as the "fifth season," is a central element of Rhineland culture and attracts millions of visitors each year. The celebrations traditionally begin on November 11 at 11:11 AM with the official opening of the carnival season. The highlight of the carnival spans six days from Women's Carnival Day (Weiberfastnacht) to Shrove Tuesday (Veilchendienstag). On Women's Carnival Day, women symbolically take over power and kick off the street carnival at 11:11 AM at the Alter Markt. During this time, the entire city transforms into a stage for exuberant celebrations, where traditional customs such as "Bützen" (friendly kissing) and "Schunkeln" (swaying together to the music) are practiced. With over 480 carnival clubs, Cologne offers a diverse program of sessions, balls, and parades. A special highlight is the Rose Monday Parade, which is considered the peak of the carnival week. This colorful parade winds through the city center and delights spectators with elaborately designed floats, music groups, and dance formations.
