Since the rediscovery of Vivaldi in the 20th century, his "Four Seasons" have been regarded as the epitome of Baroque program music and a classic par excellence. Vivaldi himself particularly valued these concertos and prefaced each of the four pieces in the first edition published in 1725 with an Italian sonnet. The lines of verse reappear in the sheet music and serve as a guide for interpretation. Bird songs, natural moods, rural life, and hunting scenes come to life musically in this way. A contrasting program is offered by Astor Piazzolla's "Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas." Created between 1965 and 1970 as independent tango compositions, they depict the seasons in the Southern Hemisphere – in Buenos Aires. The term "porteño" refers to everything associated with the Argentine capital. Piazzolla succeeds in creating a Latin American counterpart to Vivaldi's world-famous concert cycle with his pieces. Two musical worlds – connected through the play of the seasons. Antonio Vivaldi: Le quattro stagioni Astor Piazzolla: Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas Violin: Tamaki Kawakubo Conductor: Jurek Dybal
