The Holy Mountain Athos - Taboo for Women

The Holy Mountain Athos, located on the eastern peninsula of Chalkidiki, has been an autonomous monastic republic and a central sanctuary of Orthodox Christianity for over a thousand years. Access to this area is strictly prohibited for women, a ban that has been in place since the year 1045.
