Emden is a very special town by the sea. Once a year, the East Frisian port city transforms into a festive wonderland at Ratsdelft and in the city garden. The unmistakable scent of almonds, spices, gingerbread, cinnamon, vanilla, and mulled wine hints that it is Advent time by the sea! Against the picturesque backdrop of the illuminated town hall lies the cozily designed Christmas village. The centerpiece is the large Christmas pyramid with delicious mulled wine, punch, and much more. From December 1st until Christmas, Santa Claus arrives every afternoon at 5 PM, bringing many gifts for the little ones. The Engelkemarkt, named after the figure of the golden virgin eagle above the city wall in the Emden coat of arms—affectionately called "Engelke up de Muer" by the locals—is a Christmas market for the whole family.
