Dike construction and coastal protection are inseparably linked to the history of East Frisia. The fight against the Blanken Hans has always held an extremely important place. The 29 km of sea dikes in Harlingerland today protect 40,000 hectares of land. In order to ensure that the inland can continue to be drained, sluice systems had to be integrated into the dike. The sluice and pumping station in Dornumersiel ensures the drainage of the 14,000-hectare inland area with a 154 km long waterway network. The tide with ebb and flow determines when and how much water flows into the North Sea.
