Brokser Marriage Market

As one of the largest folk festivals in Northern Germany, the Brokser Heiratsmarkt attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the spa town of Bruchhausen-Vilsen every year at the end of August. Whether it's bratwurst and beer, sweets and a wild carousel ride, a bit of shopping, trying your luck with raffle tickets, leisurely strolling through the trade tents, or partying in the numerous festival tents, there is truly something for everyone here. The trade tents feature a trade show with vendors from the local community as well as regional companies. A highlight of the Brokser Heiratsmarkt is the popular fun weddings, known as "marriage on trial." This works similarly to a real wedding, complete with a wedding vow, sparkling wine, a gingerbread heart, a top hat, a bouquet, and even a veil. Afterwards, the couple receives an official-looking marriage certificate, and to top it all off, a commemorative photo can even be taken. However, this marriage is not permanent; it expires on the last day of the market at the latest. Approximately 100 to 130 couples are "fun-wedded" each year, with a growing trend. Other highlights of the Brokser Heiratsmarkt include the election of "Miss Brokser Heiratsmarkt," the fireworks on Friday, and the traditional horse market with a young foal show and the bachelor auction on Tuesday, the last day of the market. The purchase at the horse market is still sealed today with the traditional handshake.
