50,000 years of life in Salzgitter

The permanent exhibition in the castle focuses on the life of Neanderthals in the Ice Age climate. The Ice Age Garden also addresses this topic and provides an impression of the living conditions of Neanderthals, the climate, and the ecology of that time. Covering approximately 2,000 square meters, visitors will find a nature-inspired landscape created based on excavation findings. Visitors will learn how landscapes and living environments were shaped and influenced throughout the Ice Age and how humans adapted to their specific environment. Topics such as weather, climate, climate change, and the lifestyle of Neanderthals are presented here. Central features include simple shelters and workspaces for processing hides and flint, as well as food preparation, along with a mammoth trap, a mammoth track, and a life-sized woolly rhinoceros. The Ice Age Garden is part of the Geopark and represents a special enrichment in the geologically diverse Braunschweiger Land.
