"Stolpersteine" translates to "stumbling stones" in English. These are small brass plaques embedded in the pavement in front of the last known residences of victims of Nazi persecution, commemorating their lives and the injustices they suffered.

"A person is only forgotten when their name is forgotten," says the artist Gunter Demnig. He commemorates the victims of the Nazi era by embedding so-called stumbling stones – 10 x 10 centimeter stones with brass memorial plaques – into the pavement in front of their last chosen residence. In Stade, Demnig laid the first stumbling stones in 2009. A total of 23 stumbling stones have been installed here. As part of the tour, some of these stumbling stones and other memorials will be visited, keeping the memory of people who lived in Stade and became victims of National Socialism alive. Pre-registration is required as the number of participants is limited. Duration: approximately 1.5 hours. Notes: Sure-footedness and sturdy footwear are required. The tour takes place in all weather conditions.
