The old craft of "bobbin lace making" has been practiced in the Harz region since the 16th century by the women and children of miners as a secondary occupation. Bobbins are spindle-shaped "spools," usually made of wood. With the help of these spools and the yarn wound around them, various lace patterns are created, or "bobbin-laced." This delicate lace could eventually be sold, helping the poor mining families secure their livelihoods. To ensure that this unusual craft technique does not die out in the Harz region, Ms. Angelika Kiebach from the Harz Club has decided to introduce novices to bobbin lace making. With great patience and love, she demonstrates the crossing and twisting of the bobbins and the work on the lace pillow in small, simple steps. In the workshop, you start with a small and easy product and gradually increase the difficulty level towards a slightly more complicated piece. At the end of the short course, it is even possible to earn a "bobbin lace diploma," although this is not an official award, but merely a lovely memento of a special weekend. Of course, Ms. Kiebach is also willing to support advanced lace makers with their work. The course is suitable for adults and children (from 4th grade accompanied by an adult). Costs: €59, plus €10 for materials directly to Ms. Kiebach; please have this amount ready in cash at the start of the course. Registration is required up to four days before the course begins at: info@rammelsberg.de. Weekend dates form a course. Image credit © World Heritage Site Rammelsberg.
