Markt 12, 01814 Bad Schandau

It is the most famous painting of German Romanticism: "The Wanderer above the Sea of Fog." A solitary wanderer gazes at a mountain landscape partially obscured by fog at twilight. Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) created this iconic work around 1817, based on sketches from the Saxon Switzerland region. The introverted master, who spent most of his life in Dresden, loved the wild and romantic rocky landscape near the city. Time and again, he wandered through nature, seeking solitude and sketching rocks, mountains, trees, and ruins. In his studio, he transformed these into fascinating, metaphorical worlds of images, true to detail, free in composition, and intense in effect. On the Caspar David Friedrich Trail and the Painter's Path in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, visitors can hike in his footsteps, discovering the mystical places that inspired him. For the first time, there is now an exhibition in Saxon Switzerland dedicated to the famous Romantic artist, who would have celebrated his 250th birthday in 2024. The immersive exhibition "CDFriedrich Inspired" in the former tourist information center at the market serves as both a multimedia monument and a virtual gallery. With immersive video projections, it invites visitors to encounter the painter and his work, to see the landscape through his eyes, and to understand the creative process—from sketch to painting. "Close your bodily eye, so that you may see your picture first with the spiritual eye. Then bring forth what you have seen in the dark, so that it may react back on others from the outside in," Caspar David Friedrich articulated his high standards for art. To see a landscape: for the painter, this was always an outward and inward exploration simultaneously. His gaze did not stop at the empirical but penetrated deeper, seeking the essential, the spiritual, the divine. The exhibition was conceived by the Dresden-based designer Jürgen Bretschneider, and the video content was produced by the Berlin graphic design agency SCHNELLE BUNTE BILDER. With two rooms and an area of about 200 square meters, the exhibition provides a compact introduction to the real landscape experience that awaits visitors while hiking in the Saxon Switzerland National Park region. Here, you can purchase a timed ticket online. Guest Card Saxon Switzerland Upon presentation of the Saxon Switzerland guest card, you will receive a discount of €1.
