From Agnese Grieco to Euripides, Seneca, and Ovid, Sophie Rois and Campbell Caspary bring ancient texts back to the stage with Phädra, the unhappy, lovesick heroine of antiquity. She shares her thoughts, her discomfort, and the reasons for her decisions. It is an exploration of love between knowledge and madness, fate and self-determination. "Mother, seized by unspeakable evil, you boldly loved the wild leader of the cruel herd, the bull; dark, impatient against the yoke was that adulterer – but he loved!" says the ancient Greek Phädra, bride of Theseus. The queen has fallen in love with her stepson Hippolytos. It was Aphrodite's will. Fate is the text. "The extraordinary performance by Sophie Rois, who embodies Aphrodite, Phädra, and the nurse, reflects the fluctuating and precarious identity of Phädra with her variety of means of expression. The play 'Phädra's Honor,' written and directed by Agnese Grieco, returns with unprecedented radicality to the unresolved riddle of Phädra, freeing her character from prejudices and simplistic reductions to a mannered feminism and exploring the dark side of desire." (Visioni del Tragico) "Between soft tones, wise thoughts, and hysterical outbursts, Sophie Rois draws on many registers of her talent" (Märkische Oderzeitung) Directed by: Agnese Grieco Stage / Costumes: Susanne Dieringer A production of the Kleist Forum For more information: http://www.kleistforum.de
