Sanssouci Concert: Versailles & Sanssouci

The musical life at the Prussian court of the "Old Fritz" flourished and radiated throughout Europe in the 18th century. He brought some of the most significant musicians and composers to his court, including Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, who served as a chamber harpsichordist for almost 30 years, and Luigi Boccherini, his "court composer." Frederick II himself also left behind a remarkable oeuvre, which includes 104 flute sonatas and the lively Symphony in D major, among other works. However, in the 17th century, another king in Europe had already made a musical impact: Louis XIV, the "Sun King" from Versailles. Jean-Philippe Rameau wrote numerous works for him, and François Couperin became the organist of his royal chapel, where Jean-Marie Leclair later performed his music.
