State Theatre Cottbus: The Sick Note | Premiere

by Sokola//Spreter, inspired by Kleist's fragment "Robert Guiskard" (premiere) The conqueror has a cold: Robert Guiskard, once a heroic ruler who was "superior in cunning to Cicero and Odysseus," is not well. The author duo Sokola//Spreter, together with director Aram Tafreshian and the acting ensemble, presents ailing ruler – similar to the one Heinrich von Kleist struggled to grasp, which is why his "Robert Guiskard" remains a fragment. In the world premiere, they further explore the weakened tyrant: His rule continues, wars are waged in his name, yet he no longer meets any expectations. He feels that in the game of hiding his illness, he is merely a shell of his former self. Sokola//Spreter question what legitimizes power and rule, why strength can be weakness, and how one can still speak the truth when the loudest voice dominates the discourse.
