The symbol of vibrant life crashes down – revealing what is essential. An English mystery play from the 16th century served as the basis for Hugo von Hofmannsthal's piece, which premiered in Berlin in 1911 and has been a staple of the Salzburg Festival since 1920. While Hofmannsthal gives his verses a timeless quality through echoes of old rhyme schemes and Middle High German, Peter Lund and Wolfgang Böhmer bring the narrative fully into our present, both linguistically and musically, without losing the universally valid philosophy...
