From May 29 to May 31, 2026, everything in Emden will revolve around small fish again, as the Matjes Days will be celebrated in the seaport city of Emden. This event is based on a tradition of over 450 years of herring fishing in Emden, which provided many families with their daily bread. In 1969, East Frisian herring fishing was relocated to Bremerhaven. For this reason, the city fathers of Emden decided to commemorate the old tradition with the Matjes Festival. Many traditional ships from both domestic and foreign ports will dock in the inner harbor and Ratsdelft during these days, bringing a touch of long-lost seafaring romance back to the city. In the evenings, various live bands will provide entertainment and contribute to the enjoyment of strolling through the festival grounds.
