"One laughs oneself crooked" and "later admires, having become more serious, a deep lyric that only at the last moment turns into something humorous - and realizes in the end that one has learned a philosophical sentence," said Tucholsky about Christian Morgenstern. The Dead Poets Society is celebrating this special poet Morgenstern on the occasion of its 20th anniversary with a performance by Hans-Werner Meyer (vocals, violin), Markus Runzheimer (bass, percussion, vocals), and Reinhardt Repke (guitar, vocals) featuring the newly set "Gallows Songs." Isn't it sometimes helpful to view things with a bit of gallows humor? Morgenstern himself wrote that "gallows poetry" is a piece of worldview and that one views the world differently from the gallows. With the gallows songs, he wanted to "spread a little intellectual lightness, cheerfulness, freedom, to invigorate the imagination, to thaw just a bit of the frozen music of the soul in the Posthorn."
