The exhibition "Living Images" at the Museum of East Asian Art in Cologne sheds light on the ritual use of artworks in the Buddhist traditions of China, Japan, and Korea. It offers a deep insight into the spiritual practices of Buddhism and shows how artworks play central roles in significant ceremonies. Among the outstanding exhibits are a Japanese Buddha Vairocana from the early 12th century and a Korean hanging scroll of a king of hell. The exhibition also addresses the "Pure Land School" and its simplified methods of worship through invocation, as well as complex ceremonies like the Bulbokjang ceremony, which illustrates the Korean custom of canonizing Buddhist images. Everyday cleansing and meditation rituals that accompany the pursuit of enlightenment are also presented. This exhibition invites visitors to explore the close connection between art, religion, and ritual in East Asian Buddhism.
