Pioneers of Change

The exhibition "Pioneers of Change" at the Historical Archive with the Rhineland Image Archive highlights the first women's movement in Cologne, whose origins date back to 1848 and reached its peak in the late 19th century. The focus is on the collective efforts of women who advocated for fundamental rights such as education and political participation. At a time when they were denied political influence, these women courageously worked behind the scenes for a fairer future. The exhibition takes visitors through the defining moments of the women's movement and traces its impact on education and society. While the First World War and the Weimar Republic were characterized by social engagement, the rise of the National Socialists in 1933 marked a turning point. However, the ideas and values survived the Second World War and laid the foundation for new movements. The exhibition is open to visit from Tuesday to Sunday with free admission. Here, not only is the past brought to life, but the ongoing struggle for equality is also reflected.
