Founding locations possess an almost mystical aura; they embody identity and tradition. An example of this is the small half-timbered house of the steel company founded by Friedrich Krupp, which still stands today on the grounds of the Essen company headquarters. Similarly, the garage where Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak built the first Apple computer has been designated as a historical monument. Such historical anchor points are of great importance to companies, but they can fade into obscurity over time – as is the case with C&A. For a long time, the house at Oosterdijk 7/9 in Sneek was considered the founding site of C&A. Until recently, a plaque on this building – a duplex with two boutiques – served as a reminder of this. In fact, this was the first retail store of Clemens and August Brenninkmeijer, opened in 1860, nearly twenty years after the company was founded. The brothers had become independent as early as 1841 and initially worked as traveling merchants. But where exactly was the house where they operated their first magazine and from which they ran their first own stores? Where did the story of C&A actually begin? The exhibition at the Forum of Draiflessen traces, through photos, memoirs, business ledgers, and administrative documents, the location where Clemens and August founded their company in 1841. Visitors can expect an exciting, multifaceted journey of discovery through archives, local history, and corporate memory.
