Stiftstraße 20, 48739 Legden

In the heart of the Münsterland region, nestled in a picturesque park landscape, lies the over 900-year-old village of Asbeck. Here, Bishop Werner von Katzenelnbogen established a significant monastery complex starting in 1173, whose Romanesque dormitory is now considered a rare example of Romanesque secular architecture in Northwest Germany. This historic building houses the Stiftsmuseum Asbeck, which vividly presents the eventful history of the monastery. Visitors can look forward to a varied program featuring expert-guided tours. During these tours, original rooms of the noble canonesses can be visited, including the cloister gallery with changing exhibitions, the Romanesque collegiate church, the gatehouse "Hunnenporte," the storage building, the bakehouse, the monastery mill, and the abbess's house. A special highlight is the virtual exploration of the medieval monastery complex using VR glasses, providing an immersive experience for all age groups. The tours take place at 2:30 PM and 4:00 PM and last approximately 90 minutes each. No registration is required. The meeting point is the dormitory. Another highlight is the exhibition "Carlheinz Voges - Mosaic of a Life," which will be on display in the dormitory Asbeck from September 21 to October 26, 2025. This exhibition honors the artist's life's work on the occasion of his 100th birthday. The Castle and Fortress Day at Stift Asbeck thus offers a unique opportunity to delve deeply into history and experience the cultural treasures of the Münsterland up close.
