Johannine Passion

With the St. John Passion, one of the two fully preserved passion works by Johann Sebastian Bach is performed. The piece is described by various conductors as immensely powerful, evocative, and intense. It recounts the Gospel narrative of John regarding the arrest of Christ up to his burial. Chorales and freely composed text sections that reflect feelings about what has been heard complement the work. The strong imagery of the piece is regularly portrayed in staged performances.
