6. SPECIAL CONCERT - Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Burkhard Götze The Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra will perform. SUMURUN is one of the grand feature films produced shortly after the First World War in Babelsberg and in the Berlin studios in Tempelhof or Weißensee, created with great effort, a star-studded cast, and countless extras. At the time referred to as a "wonder film," the oriental fairy tale SUMURUN is today something extraordinary in the works of Ernst Lubitsch. As the director and actor of the Hunchback, Lubitsch can be seen here for the last time in front of the camera, showcasing his pantomime talent alongside other stars like Paul Wegener and Pola Negri. The film is a tribute to Lubitsch's mentor Max Reinhardt, who presented SUMURUN as a pantomime at the Deutsches Theater ten years before Lubitsch's film adaptation, triggering one of the greatest international German theater successes before the First World War. The music for the film and pantomime was composed by the Berlin composer Victor Hollaender. This music, which became his greatest triumph, was lost for decades and was rediscovered as a piano reduction only in 2020 by Burkhard Götze, who reconstructed and newly orchestrated it. The Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra will present this music live to the film under his direction for the first time to the Brandenburg audience as a film concert. SUMURUN has also become known as a subject in Thomas Mann's "The Magic Mountain" and plays an important role in the film episode of the novel. For more information: Schedule Individual Event
