During the holidays, so-called mass figures from the Eberhard Rauchfuß collection will be featured in our music automata – a fun experience that is sure to surprise visitors of all ages. In the toy industry, like many new products, the mass figure is a result of economic pressure. For instance, tin and lead soldiers were discontinued before World War I, as all metal had to go to the armaments industry. Wood flour, waste materials, gypsum, kaolin, held together by glue and wires inside – this is meant to be the mass from which play figures for small budgets are ultimately made. However, even cheaper and more stable plastics led to mass figures being displaced in the 1960s. Although the original form has disappeared from the market, even the figures made from plastic injection molding are still sought-after collector's items today.
