Town Hall Gallery: Silenced! The Expellees in the Soviet Occupation Zone and the GDR

An important social group in the GDR that was not allowed to appear as a group until 1989 were the German expellees, who, with the end of World War II, found themselves in the then Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ) due to flight or expulsion. They came from the German eastern provinces beyond the Oder-Neisse line, from Pomerania, East Prussia, Silesia, and eastern Brandenburg, as well as from other German settlement areas in West Prussia, Danzig, the Baltic States, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Romania, and the Soviet Union. For more than four decades, the life experiences of these people were ignored and pushed into private, familial memory. The exhibition aims to contribute to the processing of this history.
