"The Wisdom of the Maya" is a captivating live film report by Martin Engelmann, in which the National Geographic photographer and filmmaker has been following the traces of the last descendants of the Maya – the Lacandones – for over a decade. In a mysterious world where time seems to stand still, Engelmann delves deep into ancient myths, rituals, and legends. With impressive imagery, he documents the vibrant life of a unique culture that is increasingly threatened by the influences of the modern world. A particularly formative part of his journey occurs in 2012, when he participates in ceremonies at the temples of Tikal just before the end of the Maya calendar. Additionally, he visits the sacred caves of Actun Tunichil Muknal and captures the visible traces of Christianization at Lake Atitlán. Another highlight of his expedition is the ascent of powerful volcanoes, where he experiences the active volcano Fuego up close. A special focus of his projects has been his engagement with the last descendants of the Maya culture, along with the associated image and film production ("The Wisdom of the Maya"). In addition to his publications, Engelmann hosts numerous live multimedia shows and lectures, where he shares his travel and photography experiences with the audience – he has held well over a thousand such events.
