The special exhibition "Gruesome Bliss. The Fascination of Kitsch" at the LVR Open-Air Museum in Kommern invites visitors to explore the multifaceted world of kitsch. Often dismissed as inferior, kitsch appears in various forms: from garden gnomes to medical novels to porcelain dishes. These objects, commonly found in many households, provide comfort and are very popular. The exhibition highlights the ambivalence of kitsch, which can be both charming and amusing as well as erotic, provocative, and political. It examines the question of why kitsch is both fascinating and repulsive. Spanning approximately 400 square meters, the exhibition offers an in-depth insight into this cultural phenomenon.
