Haller Bach Days Concert No. 2: Opening Concert Marienfeld - Claudio Monteverdi: Vespers of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Claudio Monteverdi's "Vespers of the Blessed Virgin" (Vespro della Beata Vergine) from 1610 is considered a milestone in sacred music of the 17th century. This work combines traditional compositional techniques with the most modern elements of the time and reflects Monteverdi's versatility as a composer. The Vespers consist of an Invitatory, five Psalms, a Hymn, and a Magnificat, complemented by four Concerti that stand out for their innovative setting of the text. Musicologists interpret these Concerti as a musical representation of the salvific significance of Mary, from her election to her eschatological role. The "Vespers" is characterized by the combination of melody, polyphony, monody, and rhythm, with the deliberate use of instruments creating expressive and tension-filled passages.
