Folk in the River 2026: Struggling with Tradition

We all love it – the dances, the songs, the traditional and "traditionally inspired" culture, the intergenerational togetherness. However, the fact that some aspects may not have aged quite so well is often not explicitly addressed. The times have changed since the 70s and 80s: Nationalism- and racism-critical, queer feminist, and climate activist perspectives allow us to connect old forms with the struggles of the present. In two workshops (song, dance) and a public discussion, we will explore the unspoken fractures, allow ourselves to disagree, find things to be really problematic, deconstruct them, and perhaps reassemble them in new ways.
