The Slovak author Michal Hvorecky presents his new book "Dissident" – a bold text about the fragility of democracy, the power of civil society, the new dissidents of the 21st century, and the necessity of dissent. Drawing from his own experiences – from the euphoric dawn following the Velvet Revolution to today's confrontation with far-right cultural politics in Slovakia – Hvorecky traces the path of Europe since the fall of the Iron Curtain. He combines memories with a precise analysis of the present and focuses on topics such as illiberal democracy, politically controlled media, conspiracy narratives, and historical distortion.
