Thomas Nicolai: Maulberg

Germany in 2016: The Dortmund couple Beate and Peter Sendler, both in their mid-fifties (she: frustrated educator, he: unsuccessful documentary filmmaker), move to the Saxon village of Maulberg and experience not only a peaceful idyll of togetherness but also the longing of many residents for the "good old" GDR. The fact that it is precisely the newcomers who have the idea is hard for the Maulberg residents to accept, but the thought is too tempting: for the 400th anniversary of the village, the community decides on an experiment: four weeks back in the GDR – with all the trimmings: old TV programs, East German products in the supermarket, which of course is once again called "Kaufhalle," with pioneer scarves and a republic birthday. However, the experiment spirals out of control, as the Maulberg residents are unstoppable in their pursuit... In his second novel, comedian and author Thomas Nicolai from Leipzig presents a mini-GDR in fast-forward: a village in northern Saxony plays GDR once again, for a month and with all the risks and side effects. A satirical farce against uncritical Ostalgie, as relevant as it could be. Thomas Nicolai hails from Leipzig and is a well-known comedian, parodist, and actor. He trained at the Ernst Busch School of Acting, performed theater in Berlin, and has been working as a freelance comedian with his own programs since 1994 (he became known for his characters "Der blonde Emil" and "Patrick Schleifer"). He has appeared on various shows on RTL, 3sat, ProSieben, WDR, NDR, and Sat.1. He hosted at the "Quatsch Comedy Club" and "NightWash," has received several cabaret awards, and works as a voice actor for audio productions. As an author, he co-developed the children's radio play series "Die Märchenmäuse," published numerous audio recordings, the language guide "Sächsisch für Anfänger," and translated "The Simpsons" and "Asterix" into Saxon.
