Workshop: "Sumi-e" Japanese Ink Painting with Uta Wilczok

Sumi-e translates to "black ink picture" or "painting." It is an art form practiced in Japan for centuries, perfected in its simplicity and expression of the essential in Zen monasteries. The workshop provides an idea of the "way of black ink," which is spontaneous, meditative, where the measure of all beauty is nature. It does not require much for this special path: delicate paper, brushes, ink, water. And our mindfulness, individuality, our doing in the present moment. The workshop is an opportunity to get to know materials, techniques, and spirit, under guidance and freely allowing the brush to dance. No prior knowledge is necessary, just a relaxed, cheerful beginner's spirit! At the beginning, a brief history of Japanese ink painting will be presented, covering various styles, as well as the specifics of composition, perspective, the significance of the unpainted in the images, and the multifaceted symbolism of the motifs. With some practice and guidance, it will be possible to create initial images in the Sumi-e style using powerful, determined strokes or sensitive, flowing lines. All materials are provided. Minimum age: 12 years.
