Discover exciting topics related to nature, biodiversity, and sustainable action in our new webinar series – compact, practical, and free of charge. As a result of the modernization of agriculture and forestry, as well as the drainage of wetlands, the once widespread adder has become rare in many regions of Germany. In Brandenburg, significant population declines have also been recorded in recent decades. Where they could still survive in relatively untouched areas, the consequences of climate change are now causing adverse changes to their habitats. To prevent the disappearance of the last known population in northeastern Brandenburg, the AGENA association has initiated a conservation project. A breeding group has been successfully established with the remaining animals, and their offspring have been released into selected suitable habitats for several years now. The presentation will highlight strategic considerations at the project's inception, the approach taken in the field, specific challenges in working with the snakes, and will provide an initial assessment after five years of project duration.
