Discover exciting topics related to nature, biodiversity, and sustainable action in our new webinar series – compact, practical, and free of charge. Prof. em. Dr. Michael Succow has been passionate about peatlands since his biology studies in the 1960s. In his lecture, he demonstrates how unique these ecosystems are, providing habitat for many rare animal and plant species. Peatlands cover only 3% of the world's land area but store twice as much carbon as the total biomass of all the forests on Earth. Unfortunately, there are only a few living, growing peatlands left – most peatlands in Germany have been drained and have thus become sources of greenhouse gas emissions instead of climate protectors. Therefore, drained peatlands should be re-wetted as much as possible, and intact peatlands must be protected at all costs. The situation with peatlands clearly shows that the preservation of biodiversity and climate protection are not opposites and must not be played against each other – rather, both are inextricably linked. It is in our hands to contribute to securing a piece of our future through the protection of peatlands!
