Around December 23rd, the winter solstice was celebrated in pre-Christian times, and green branches in homes were seen as protection against misfortune and a sign of hope. Starting in the 17th century, the first fir trees began to appear in the homes of wealthy citizens. The Christmas celebration as we know it today, with a decorated tree, songs, a nativity scene, and gifts, has existed since the 19th century.
