In the year of his 240th birthday and 200th death anniversary, Carl Maria von Weber is given special honors. Weber is considered one of the most significant German opera composers before Wagner, who strongly advocated for this genre through his works and writings. His fame is based on the "Freischütz," which is regarded as a national opera, but in addition to other operas, Carl Maria von Weber composed orchestral works, solo concertos, piano, and chamber music that deserve attention. Excellent young talent opens the Elblandia year 2026. Members of the Sinopoli Academy of the Saxon State Orchestra Dresden perform – after a contrasting and vibrant piece for solo flute by Jacques Ibert – Weber's only Flute Trio in G minor, Op. 63. In the second part of the program, Franz Schubert's Octet in F major, D 803 will be heard. Written for clarinet, bassoon, horn, two violins, viola, cello, and double bass, it was the most extensive chamber music work of its time due to its length. Even while composing, Schubert knew he would break boundaries: "I have done little new in songs," he wrote at the end of March 1824 to his friend Leopold Kupelwieser, "but I have tried my hand at several instrumental pieces... in general, I want to pave my way to the great symphony in this manner." Indeed, the Octet sounds like a symphonic study in many places.
