Germany is internationally regarded as exemplary in its processing of its Nazi past and in commemorating the victims. But what about the racist acts of today? Asal Dardan addresses German memory culture. And she asks: What is being remembered? And why is so much simultaneously forgotten or even repressed? In her book "Traumaland," she embarks on a search for traces of violence in Germany's past and present – in places like Berlin, Cologne, Dessau, or Hoyerswerda. The Iranian-born author demonstrates why the highly praised German discourse on memory simultaneously rejects and excludes today's victims. She advocates for a shared remembrance that takes into account the historically different experiences of violence. Asal Dardan's book is a call for solidarity beyond all identities. Asal Dardan, born in 1978 in Tehran and raised in Cologne, Bonn, and Aberdeen, studied cultural studies and Middle Eastern studies in Germany and Sweden. She has received multiple awards for her essays. Her work addresses themes such as origin, exclusion, racism, and right-wing extremist violence.
