November 9, 1989. The wall falls in Berlin. It is the happiest moment in German history. Ines Geipel had already fled to the West in the summer and experiences the rupture of time, the hopes and new beginnings as a student in Darmstadt. 35 years later, she reflects: What did this historic moment of happiness feel like? How do we narrate East and West and the unification of the GDR and the FRG today? Where does the anger come from, where does the denial arise when it comes to the current state of the country? With great clarity and openness, Ines Geipel revisits in her book "Fabelland." She goes back to the political upheaval landscape after 1989, to her own family, back to all the distorted, occupied spaces of memory, back to the trivializations and legends that poison the present. A book that poses the question: Can the Germans also squander their happiness? Ines Geipel, born in 1960, is a former top athlete from the GDR and today a professor of German poetic art at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. She reads from her book "Fabelland," published last year. Sponsors: Brandenburg State Center for Political Education. For more information: Event website.
