Program Johann Sebastian Bach Suite No. IV E-flat Major BWV 1010 Suite No. V C Minor BWV 1011 Suite No. VI D Major BWV 1012 "Cycles shape the course of the world, our lives, the year, and the day. Cycles create order and provide rhythm in an incomprehensible world," says Leipzig Bach expert Michael Maul. The cycle is also at home in art, appearing "whenever an artist wants to express as much as possible, needs space for their idea to unfold, or when the scope of their work simply requires a structuring thought." There is hardly an area where Johann Sebastian Bach did not set new compositional standards. His six suites for solo cello belong here. Composed around 1720 at the court in Anhalt-Cöthen, they showcase Bach as a master in applying counterpoint, the Baroque principle of "note against note," to a single-voiced instrument. In their suggestive polyphony, the preludes and stylized dance movements reach far beyond themselves. The genius behind this work is evident in interpretations from the piano that make these suites sound as if they were intended from the very beginning for a keyboard instrument. After Jan Vogler interprets the first three suites in April 2025, the cellist will return to Lohmen to present the other three works of the cycle. He has known this Bach since his childhood. At that time, a musical cosmos opened up for Vogler, one that has no end to traverse. Colleagues refer to the suites as "Bible" (Mischa Maisky) or "Quintessence" (Pablo Casals). Encountering them as an interpreter with one's own imagination is "the greatest challenge," says Vogler, who plays on a Baroque Stradivari cello equipped with modern steel strings. We open the gallery room with the Göding altar piece of the village church in Lohmen. Around the concert, you have the unique opportunity to view the altar piece by Heinrich Göding from 1575 up close. There, Franziska Wosnitza, the restorer of this artwork, will gladly answer your questions. The altar piece was commissioned by the Electoral Chamber Secretary Johann Jenitz but lost its place and function with the construction of a larger church in 1789. It was restored in Dresden in 2021 and subsequently returned to the Lohmen church. Prior to that, the artwork was on display at the Dresden Castle. Admission is free. Registration is not required. The prayer room, more of a parlor, accommodates up to ten people.
