Literature & Film: Don't Ask Why – Hildegard Knef on Her 100th Birthday

Marlene Dietrich wrote about Hildegard Knef: "She had an inner strength, and she was smart, which cannot be said of all actresses." She started as an actress and had her first major success in Wolfgang Staudte's film "The Murderers Are Among Us." One hundred years ago, on December 28, 1925, she was born in Ulm. Just six months later, she moved to Berlin, and Knef grew up in Schöneberg. She was a film star, later a singer, and a full-time legend. Her cheeky and unsentimental manner was the driving force behind her mass-appeal image. In 1970, with the publication of "The Gift Horse," she also became known as a bestselling author.
